Arcade Islands: Volume One - A KGK Review
Developed by Teyon and published by Mastiff Games, the Arcade Islands is a collection of party and mini games that will guarantee hours of fun for yourself or a group of friends. Will over 30 games, there is a little something for everybody. Some are simple button mashing, some are shooters, and one is just air hockey.
The games are grouped by themed Islands that have 4-6 games per island. You will have to unlock the next island and games by earning stars in the games available to you. Some of these games support up to 4 players. When highlighting the game you will be presented with the description and the controls for that game. Each game also has its own world and friend leaderboard scores displayed by the description.
Some games are much more fun than others but they all have redeeming qualities. All of the games can be sampled in just an hour or so but unlocking the last islands may take a bit of practice in the prior world’s games. Getting 3 stars in a game will unlock its trophy that can be viewed in the trophy room. Each game also has a secret achievement tied to it that is unlocked by performing a special feat within the game.
My personal favourite would have to be the puzzle game, Hex Eggs, where you have to create a line that connects from one side of the stage to the other. In this game you have a large honeycomb shaped board and are given 3 “tetris” type pieces to choose from. The goal is to survive as long as you can and create lines from left to right or from top to bottom.
There are a few recognisable games in the collection, as well. There is a Luxor type game where you shoot coloured balls in an attempt to make 3 of a kind matches against a line of coloured balls before it reaches the end. There is also Joust type game called Alien Balloonists, a Asteroids game called Meteors, A version of Snake, and a mini golf game.
Although this game is more fun in a party setting, it has a few quality single player games. Everyone will find at least one that they enjoy but at the price point it may be asking too much for most people. I would recommend picking this up on a sale.
